Lisbon is the most influential economic, cultural and historical city in Portugal. This is nowhere more evident than in the number of exceptional art galleries the city plays host to. The cream of the crop of Lisbon art galleries is undoubtedly Galleria 111.
Galleria 111 was opened in 1964 by Manuel Brito. With a history spanning four decades, Galleria 111 is the oldest operating art gallery in Portugal.
Anyone with an interest in art will enjoy a visit to Galleria 111. It is easy to find, located in the Campo Grande District. The gallery features several hundred works form an impressive array of artists, both local talent and international. Almost every art form is covered, from simple sketch work to large sculpture. Major weight is given to local artists such as Joana Salvador, Fatima Mendonca and Antonio Ole amongst others, and this is the premier gallery to view Portuguese modern art.
As well as presenting a static gallery of art, Galleria 111 also hosts many exhibitions throughout the year. These exhibitions showcase not only local Portuguese artists and art forms, but regularly include well-known international artists and follow a specialized theme. If you are planning to visit Lisbon, then it is worth checking with Galleria 111 in advance, to find out what exhibitions are planned over the duration of your visit.
The gallery also houses a bookshop and a small store which sells art and other small items such as postcards and silk screens.
Highlights of Galleria 111
The highlight of the year for fans of Galleria 111 is undoubtedly the annual Artelisboa Art Fair. During this event, almost every major Portuguese artists will be featured (as well as many international artists), making this the largest single gallery run art event on the Lisbon calendar. Well worth visiting.
One of the more interesting aspects of Galleria 111 is that it operates in two locations. The main gallery in Lisbon, and a secondary site in Oporta. What this means is that the gallery is seldom static. Artworks and collections are constantly swapped between the two locations, making no two trips to the gallery the same. For a real treat, visit both locations, if you have the time to make the journey.
The main highlights however, are the works produced by local, usually unheard of artists. The gallery hosts some of the best emerging art to be found in Portugal. In many ways, having a work exhibited in this gallery is the first step to becoming a recognised Portuguese artist, so visitors are always assured of viewing the very best in fresh art.
